A NEW SILVERLINE COIN FROM BENIN: THE RHINOCEROS

Under the motto Protection of the Nature the african country Benin already issued some coins depicting the Forest Elephant and the Zebra. Now were is the third animal in this series, the Rhinoceros. Again it is a critical endangered animal. In Africa exist two different species of Rhinos, the White and the Black Rhinoceros. They mainly live in the South and the East of the continent, the latter was also common in West Africa, but not seen there anymore since 1996. So it can be assumed that the west african population is already extinct. Poachers kill the animals because of their horns, which they sell mainly to Asia there the horns are considered a potency medicine. The increasing poverty on the african continent leads to more kills every year. The african conservation authorities fight a hard battle to protect the last Rhinos, but oftentimes they lack the money to equip well their park rangers who lead a deadly fight against professional poachers armed to the teeth.

The coin is issued as a part of the Silverline program of the MCI Mint. It consists of one ounce fine silver and is minted in prooflike quality. The mintage is 5,000 pieces.

EINE NEUE SILVERLINE-MÜNZE AUS BENIN: DAS NASHORN

Unter dem Motto Schutz der Natur hat das afrikanische Land Benin bereits Münzen mit dem Waldelefanten und dem Zebra herausgegeben. Nun gibt es die dritte Münze der Serie, das Nashorn. Wieder geht es um ein Tier, das stark in seiner Existenz gefährdet ist. In Afrika gibt es zwei Arten, das Breitmaul- und das Spitzmaulnashorn. Sie leben vor allem im Süden und im Osten des Kontinents, letzteres war auch einmal in Westafrika heimisch, wurde dort allerdings 1996 das letzte Mal gesichtet. So kann man annehmen, dass die westafrikanische Population inzwischen ausgestorben ist. Wilderer töten die Tiere, um an ihre Hörner zu kommen, die sie hauptsächlich nach Asien verkaufen, wo sie als Potenzmittel gelten. Die sich in Afrika ausbreitende Armut führt jedes Jahr zu mehr Tötungen von Nashörnern. Die afrikanischen Naturschutzbehörden führen einen harten Kampf, um die letzten Nashörner zu schützen, doch oft fehlt ihnen das nötige Geld, um ihre Park Rranger mit dem Notwendigsten auszurüsten, die sich einen tödlichen Kampf liefern mit professionellen, bis an die Zähne bewaffneten Wilderern.

Die Münze gehört zum Silverline-Programm der MCI Mint. Sie besteht aus einer Unze Feinsilber und wurde in Spiegelglanz-Qualität geprägt. Die Auflage beträgt 5.000 Stück.
