SILVER OUNCES FROM AFRICA
In the first half of the year 2015 several
african countries issued under the SILVERLINE program of MCI Mint
fine silver coins with a mix of interesting motifs.
The round was started by the Forest Elephant of
Benin, which was traditionally issued already in the autumn of the
previous year. This is the second issue of the series, so that
collectors were pleased to get the issue of 2016, that is the third,
in Octobre 2015. To every Elephant motif of Benin belongs a variant
which is partially gilded and a XXL version made of a whole kilogram
of fine silver. In the spring of 2015 Benin made the next move with
the Zebra coin, and the country will issue further silver coins in
the future under the motto „Protection of the Nature“ with even
more species out of the impressive animal world of Africa.
Already at the beginning of the year the Republic
of Chad issued it's first coin under the SILVERLINE programm – the
Hippopotamus. The mother with her young shown on the coin makes a
peaceful impression, but it should not conceal that Hippos are the
most dangerous animals of the african continent. Hippos are
responsible every year for far more deaths than crocodiles, lions and
snakes. Sure the reason for it is the fact that man penetrates
incessantly deeper and more aggressive into the habitat of these
animals. The Chad knows about this problems. Wide parts of this
country are in the grip of the desert, and the animal world with it's
many rare species is only little explored; yet there are a lot of
nature reserve areas, some are pretty big, where the country located
at the southern border of the Sahara undertakes serious attempts to
preserve it's unique flora and fauna for coming generations.
Burkina Faso, another central african country,
started in 2014 a series under the title „Gods of the World“ with
an impressive representation of Poseidon, the greek God of the
oceans. The tsunami wave in the background of the coin picture came
from a woodblock print of the famous japanese painter Hokusai. Well,
this year follows the second coin of the series, depicting the
Goddess Aphrodite. An antique temple forms the background to the
appearance of the Goddess of Love, which, only clothed in her long
hair, seems to rise directly out of a Botticelli painting. Tempting
coin indeed.
Togo, once a german colony, however issued in May
2015 a coin with a topic from the german history – the 200th
birthday of Otto von Bismarck. The „Iron Chancellor“ you may like
or not – he started war against France and was responsible for the
persecution of socialists and catholics – but an important
historical personality he was indeed; before him there was no united
Germany, no german state in the modern sense. Truely he was not
squeamish in the pursuit of his objectives and never a proponent of
political correctness, but the maker of the Kaiser influenced far
more than most of his contemporaries not only the history of Germany,
but of the world far into the future. The pickelhaube, which his
portrait on the coin is wearing, seems a symbol of the double-edged
role Bismarck played on the stage of world politics.
As it's contribution to the SILVERLINEs Cameroon
picked out a theme out of the history of the colonization of the
american Wild West, which also will make beat faster the hearts of
all fans of the railroad genre. On the 10th of May 1869, at an
otherwise wildly unimportant place amidst the wilderness of Utah by
name of Promontory Summit, took place a ceremony in the course of
which were connected the rails between the Central and the Union
Pacific Railroad Companies. By this the americans accomplished the
first transcontinental railroad connection from the coast of the
Atlantic to that of the Pacific ocean. From now on travellers from
New York could reach San Francisco by train, without having to change
on horseback or stagecoach in the Wild West. The transcontinental
railroad connection had enormous effects on the commercial
developement of the american west and created a boom which the United
States badly needed after the devastations of the American Civil War
between North and South. The natives of course faced a catastrophe;
their living space melted rapidly in the same degree as white
settlers arrived in growing numbers into the Promised Land of the
west and as little ramshackle train stations in the middle of nowhere
grew into gigantic cities. One of the two locomotives present in the
ceremony at Promontory Summit was the Union Pacific 119. She was
build 1868 by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in Paterson, New
Jersey, and only took place in the ceremony because the special
locomotive of the vice president of Union Pacific Railroad could not
cross a bridge damaged by a flood and he badly needed a substitute on
the other side of the river. Although her participation made her a
legend, sje spent the most of her life very unspectacular as a
freight train locomotive. In 1903 she was scrapped. Later the people
regretted this, and when at Promontory Summit was founded the Golden
Spike National Historic Site a copy true to the original of the
legendary locomotive was build, which tourist can marvel at until
today.

2016er Münze freuen, der Nummer drei also.
Gebaut 1868
von Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in Paterson, New Jersey, nahm
