Siegfried the Dragonslayer

English Version:

SIEGFRIED THE DRAGONSLAYER

A few years ago almost no one inside numismatic business was familiar with the name of the african state Burkina Faso. The situation changed completely since commemorative coins from this country are now an integral part of the portfolio of many coin dealers around the world and eagerly sought-after pieces by a lot of collectors. Starting the hype with the Sabre-toothed Tiger in 2013, Burkina Faso meanwhile issues every year a bunch of new impressive and rare numismatic items.

Almost every country has its National Epic. Greece has Homer's Iliad, Iceland the Edda, France the Chanson de Roland, Finland the Kalevala, India the Mahabharata, Guatemala the Popol Vuh, Portugal the Lusiads and so on. Germany's National Epic is the medieval Song of the Nibelungs. It based loosely on historic events in the time of the Barbarian Invasions when the Roman Empire made its last breaths. It centers around the massacre committed by the Huns to the Burgundians, settling along the Rhine around the town of Worms. The medieval author enriched the story with many fairy-tale topics – we find a dragon, a dwarf, a magic hat and magical swords, and he dramatised it by making a blood feud the main theme which led inevitably to the grim end like in a greek tragedy.

The main protagonist of the first part of the Epic is Siegfried, the archetypal germanic hero who is almost invincible and who wins in the course of his adventures not only a treasure of unimaginable value but also the heart of the beautiful burgundian princess Kriemhild. One of his first fights he had against the dragon. After killing the beast Siegfried bathed in the dragon's blood which made his skin invulnerable like an armour, but a single leaf of a linden tree fell on his shoulder, creating a spot which the dragon blood could not reach leaving Siegfried vulnerable to a later attack by his arch enemy.

The coin „Siegfried, the Dragonslayer“ shows the scene in which he baths in the blood of the slain dragon you can see in the background. You also see the linden leaf on the shoulder belonging to the athletic body of the battle-hardened hero. It is a stroke of luck that the mint choose to make not a one ounce, not a five ounce, but a one kilogram coin, so the collectors can see the marvellous picture in every detail.

Since most african countries cannot afford an own minting plant, most of the african money is struck by european companies, that is true both for the currency and the commemorative coins. Several mints which produce for the inernational market, equipped with high tech machinery essential for minting the advanced numismatic items the modern coin market demands, are meanwhile located in Germany. So the Nibelungen coin was produced in the country of origin of the epic, and the design was made by the german artist Christiane Fengler.

The coin consists of a whole kilogram of fine silver refined with an antique finish which affords a certain amount of work done by hand. This patina has two important effects. First it intensifies the appearance of the relief, and second it saves the coin against spotting of the silver surface you see oftentimes on older proof coins. With only 99 pieces the mintage is very low, and for sure another coin will follow depicting the next episode of the Song of the Nibelungs.

Deutsche Version:
